Metal vs. Architectural Shingles in North Carolina: Pros, Cons, and Cost Considerations

Choosing a roofing material isn’t just about appearance—it’s about performance, longevity, and how your roof holds up in North Carolina’s climate. For many homeowners, the decision comes down to metal roofing vs. architectural shingles. Both are proven options. Both can perform well when installed correctly. And both have tradeoffs that matter depending on your home, budget, and long-term plans.

Why Hiring a GC-Licensed Roofer in North Carolina Matters (Even Though It’s Not Required)

North Carolina does not require a standalone roofing license for many residential roofing jobs. That means a wide range of contractors—experienced or not—can legally offer roofing services. Some are excellent professionals. Others are temporary crews, storm chasers, or companies that appear after major weather events and disappear just as quickly.

How Roofing Warranties Work: Manufacturer vs. Workmanship (What Homeowners Miss)

Many homeowners hear phrases like “lifetime warranty” or “covered by the manufacturer” and assume they’re fully protected if anything ever goes wrong. In reality, roofing warranties are more nuanced, and knowing how they actually work can save you frustration later.

How Long Does a Roof Last in North Carolina’s Climate?

North Carolina roofs work harder than many homeowners realize. Between hot summers, sudden storms, and year-round humidity, roofing materials expand, contract, and age faster than they might in milder climates. A roof that performs well on paper doesn’t always perform the same way on a real home in the Triangle.

What to Do After a Hail or Wind Storm in Raleigh (Before Leaks Start)

Storm damage isn’t always dramatic. Wind damage can lift shingles and break the seal without tearing anything off. Hail damage can bruise or crack the shingle surface in a way that’s hard to see from the yard.

If you need a new roof then these are your people. They did a great job in all aspects. I was so impressed on how well they took care of my property. Tearing off a roof is dirty work but at the end of the day my yard looked just like it did before they arrived. They were so easy to work with and did what they said they would when they said they would. They didn’t try to upsell me! Top notch I would without out a doubt use them again.

Everything worked so well with Summit/Brantley the first time they did our roof that I reached out to him when our son’s home needed a new roof. Great service and wonderful people to deal with. Thank you!

I highly recommend Summit Roofing for roof replacement. They made it easy for us to file a claim with our insurance company to replace the roof, and they were honest and upfront about
everything during the entire process. I also know the owner personally, Brantley Blanchard, and he already had a reputation for excellent service in the roofing industry (which is why we chose them!). The crew came early, completed the job quickly, and they even came back for cleanup and checked the quality.
