A common question we get frequently from our customers is, “Which roofing system is best for my home? Asphalt shingles or metal?” This is not an easy one to answer, as there are a number of variables a homeowner should consider before making this important choice.
Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material used today due to their durability and relatively long life spans (25-30 years) if properly maintained. There are several types available and they offer resistance to wind, fire, and algae growth, and aid in reducing energy costs by providing a good solar reflective surface.
Metal roofing is known for its longevity (sometimes up to 100 years )and its impermeability. It’s highly resistant to the elements and is typically made of zinc, copper, and steel alloys. Metal roofs can be installed over existing roofs and despite their makeup, are lightweight. Their long-run costs can be cheaper than their asphalt shingle roof counterparts, but their up-front costs can be considerable. In addition to this basic overview, there are more specific factors to weigh.
First there are aesthetics. Today’s manufacturers of both asphalt shingles and metal roofing systems offer their products in a variety of colors making a quick and easy selection hard. Complicating the issue for those homeowners leaning toward shingles are the many textures to choose from.
Then there are the warranties provided with each roof based upon the type of material they are constructed from. The best quality metal roofs are constructed using a heavier gauge material and as a result carry a 30-year warranty. Likewise, the longest lasting asphalt shingle roofs offer warranties of 20 to 50 years, or even lifetime protection.
With all those color and texture options, and all those warranty periods to choose from, there’s a vast difference in pricing. Homeowners should be sure to carefully consider their budgets, as well as any desired aesthetics and warranty periods when deciding on a roofing system.
